Layered quantum materials have attracted tremendous interest from the communities of condensed matter physicists, chemists, semiconductor device engineers, and material scientists in recent years. Among them, layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit distinct properties from their bulk counterparts because of reduced dimensionality and symmetry, and offer unique opportunities for applications such as nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, spintronics, valleytronics, gas sensor, energy storage, and information processing. For many of these practical applications, knowledge and the lattice dynamics and electronic band structure of layered quantum materials is important not only to characterize the structure but also to understand the optical and electronic properties of devices. Optical spectroscopy has been proved to be an effective tool for probing such properties of layered quantum materials, providing critical information about the phononic and electronic excitations in these systems. Our primary techniques are THz, infrared, Raman, optical, and ellipsometric spectroscopies. The internship student will collect optical measurements, analyze the data, and write up the first draft of paper.
