“Lab for Solid State Ionic Devices” was led by Prof Kuan-Zong Fung at Hierarchical Green-Energy Materials Research Center, and Dept. of Materials Science & Engineering.
Its research focuses on (i) advanced battery materials including high capacity cathode, solid electrolyte, oxide anode; (ii) materials for solid oxide fuel cell: conducting oxide cathode, oxide electrolyte, carbon-deposition free anode; (iii) materials for air pollution detection/control: gas sensors, De-NOx catalysts.
Based on the understanding of defect chemistry, we will try to conduct the property improvement of electrode/electrolytes through dopants and atmosphere control. With integration of adequate nanotechnologies for extending reaction sites, better cell performance will be demonstrated. Students joining our lab will learn fundamental concepts about solid-state electrochemistry and its application on advanced batteries, fuel cells, and/or chemical sensors. Students will also get hands-on experience on materials processing and characterization including tape casting, sintering, XRD/SEM analysis, and conductivity measurement. Accepted students will be provided with TEEP fellowship. Student housing or dormitory will be arranged before arrival. Students with an engineering/science background are welcome to apply.
